Vitran Express Announces General Rate Increase (March 21, 2006)
Vitran will implement a general rate increase of 5.9% effective April 3, 2006. This increase will impact those customers who are not on held rates or contracts.
In addition, customers who have commodity rates, pup load rates and pallet rates will also increase 5.9%.. Our VITR507 rates to Canada will increase 5.9%
Vitran's AMC will increase in the following applications:
* NEMF/Pennsylvania points - $90.25
* Canadian - $122.85
* Direct - $73.60
* Jointline - $100.30
Overall, we made very few changes to our extra service changes. The only one you may have occasion to be impacted by was our over length rule. We will now apply a 40%
discount to any freight in excess of 20ft. The application of this 40% will be off the agreed upon rate base in effect at the time of the shipment.
This new tariff along with our rules are now harmonized with Chris. So both carriers will be selling the same base of rates and the same rules. This should help eliminate
some confusion by shippers who have compared our two bases previously.
From the standpoint of rising costs in purchasing new tractors, trailers and forklifts we are seeing increases of 7-10% in these new purchases due to steel and energy costs.
While everyone can point to healthcare costs as an area of increased cost, as a transportation company we bear the brunt of a larger impact because 65% of our cost is related
to people. That compares to 35-50% for manufacturing and retail. We also have had to increase starting wages for drivers in an attempt to retain and attract new ones. This
is a critical factor in our continued ability to provide on time service. Lastly, we also are making a large investment with the addition of 2000 more load tables. We
purchased 1000 of these tables last year so that we can eliminate claims and enhance our productivity by utilizing more space on our line haul trailers. Vitran is committed to
being able to provide the best transportation service available for our customers and our investment in our infrastructure and people demonstrate that commitment.
